Character Traits
Character Traits Guide
Character traits are the dimensions which are used to describe the human personality. In psychology we call character traits as character factors or big five factors or FFM (Five factor Model). Since five different dimensions are take into the account while judging the personality of person it is called as five factor model.
This model was first developed by Costa And McCrae in the year 1992 and till today it remains as the most economical and robust model in understating the connection involving academic behavior and personality. The five different traits or factors are agreeableness, extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness and openness. The common acronyms used to describe these factors are CANOE or NEOAC or OCEAN.
Conscientiousness is characterized by being organized, achievement oriented and disciplined. Neuroticism is related to anxiety, impulse control and emotional stability. Extraversion is shown from high degree of talkativeness, sociability and assertiveness. Openness can be measured from strong preference for novelty and intellectual curiosity. Agreeableness means being sympathetic, helpful and cooperative towards others. There are some evidences that show both motivation and personality are tied each other with a difference in its learning style. For most of the educators it is recommended to go beyond the cognition level to understand the academic behavior in depth.
Behind the five factors which are explained above there is a correlation and is specific to each and every trait. In order to prove these five factors are true psychologists have come up with number of theories showing the exact relationship. The FFM model is comprehensive and data driven model that helps in many researches related to human understanding. Understating the human personality and its behavior is the main and fundamental goal of psychology. Now separate researchers working on each of the above mentioned factors to understand them in detail. They study the factors and prove them in hundreds of ways to show it is correct.
